Your Story Is More Powerful Than You Think

Here’s something I want you to remember: people can argue scripture all day long, but they can never argue your story. That’s what makes sharing your testimony so powerful.

I know what you’re thinking. “My story isn’t that dramatic. I didn’t overcome addiction or live some wild life before Christ.” Listen, dead people do dead things. The Bible says you were dead in your sins, and that’s enough. You don’t need to air your dirty laundry or have some extreme testimony to make an impact. God can use your story exactly as it is to reach someone who needs to hear it.

The problem is most people don’t know how to share their story without taking 20 minutes. They ramble, they get lost in the details, and they miss the opportunity. I’m going to show you a simple framework that will help you formulate your story and share it with confidence. It’s called Before, How, Now.

Why Your Story Matters

Your personal testimony is one of the most effective tools you have for pointing people to Jesus. When you share what God has done in your life, you’re giving people something real, something they can connect with. Your story is relatable. It’s authentic. And most importantly, it’s yours.

Everyone has a story worth sharing. Maybe you grew up in church like I did. Maybe you came to Christ later in life. Maybe your story is quiet and steady, not loud and dramatic. That doesn’t make it any less powerful. God has been at work in your life, and when you share that with others, you’re giving them a glimpse of who He is and what He can do.

You can share your story anytime, anywhere.

The truth is, God wants to use your life to reach the people around you. Your neighbors. Your coworkers. Your family members. They might not listen to a sermon, but they’ll listen to your story. So let me show you how to share it in a way that’s clear, confident, and doesn’t take all day.

The “Before, How, Now” Framework

Here’s the framework that makes sharing your testimony simple: Before, How, Now.

Think of it like this:

  • Before: 10% of your story
  • How: 30% of your story
  • Now: 60% of your story

Let me break down each part for you.

Before: Keep It Brief (10%)

This is your life before Christ. But here’s the key: you don’t need to spend a lot of time here. Like I said earlier, dead people do dead things, so leave it dead. A lot of people think their story isn’t powerful if they weren’t a drug dealer or didn’t do all these horrible things. That’s just not true.

For me, I grew up in church my whole life. I didn’t know I wasn’t saved until I was 12 years old. That’s my “before.” Simple. Short. To the point.

You might say something like:

  • “Before I gave my life to Christ, I thought I had it all together, but I was empty inside.”
  • “I grew up going to church, but I didn’t have a real relationship with Jesus.”
  • “I was searching for purpose in all the wrong places.”

Keep this part brief. Don’t get stuck here. The power isn’t in how bad you were. The power is in what Christ did.

How: Give Some Details (30%)

This is how you gave your life to Christ. This is your salvation story, and it deserves some detail. What happened? Where were you? What made you realize you needed Jesus?

For me, a good friend of mine passed away in a car accident when I was 12. I went to her funeral, and for the first time, I thought about eternity. It made me realize I’d never given my life to Christ. I was scared of dying before I gave my life to Christ.

So I gave my life to Jesus around age 12 because of that tragedy. That’s my “how.”

This is where you can share specifics:

  • Was it at VBS?
  • Did someone share the gospel with you?
  • Was it at home, at church, at camp?
  • What was happening in your life that led you to that moment?

Come on, get some details. Help people see the moment when everything changed for you. This part of your story shows people that salvation is real and personal.

Now: Spend the Most Time Here (60%)

This is where you spend the majority of your time. This is your life after Christ. This is the transformation, the growth, the ways you’ve seen God work in your life from that moment until today.

Now, I’m not as fearful of death as I was before I gave my life to Christ. That doesn’t mean I want to die today, but I’m not as scared as I was. I can see God’s fingerprints all over my life. From age 12 to now, I’ve watched Him guide me, grow me, and use me.

Every time I was obedient, I grew. Every time I spent time alone with God, it helped me out. Now I get to be part of what God is doing. I get to point teenagers to Jesus. I get to watch students come alive in their faith. I get to see God move in ways I never imagined.

This is where you connect the dots for people. Show them how God has been faithful. Talk about:

  • How your relationship with God has grown
  • Specific ways you’ve seen Him work in your life
  • How He’s changed your perspective, your priorities, your purpose
  • The difference Christ has made in your daily life

This is the part that gives people hope. This is the part that shows them what life with Jesus actually looks like.

Putting It Into Practice

Now it’s your turn. I want to challenge you to write out your story using this framework. Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your phone and write it out:

Before: What was your life like before Christ? (Keep it short, just a sentence or two)

How: How did you give your life to Christ? (Give some details, a paragraph or so)

Now: What has life been like since you met Jesus? (Spend the most time here, talk about how you’ve grown and how you see God at work)

Once you’ve written it out, practice it. Say it out loud. Share it with a friend or your small group. Get comfortable telling your story so that when the opportunity comes, you’re ready.

You can share less or you can share more depending on the situation. The beauty of this framework is that it’s flexible. You can tell your story in three minutes or ten minutes. But the structure stays the same: Before, How, Now.

Let God Take It From Here

Here’s what I’ve learned: when you’re obedient to share your story, God shows up. I took 40 teenagers and eight leaders to New Jersey one year, and our motto was “All 48.” All 48 of us were going to share our salvation story with one other person. If you weren’t saved, you’d say, “Man, I haven’t given my life to Christ yet.” But if you were saved, you were going to share your story and let God do the rest.

Because of our obedience and willingness to get out of our comfort zone, God met us where we were at, and it changed everything. Students came back from that trip sharing their stories left and right. Salvations started happening. Bible studies broke out in basements. That’s how powerful sharing your story can be.

So here’s my challenge to you: write out your Before, How, Now today. Don’t wait. Get it down on paper. Practice it. And then be ready. Be ready for that conversation at work, at the grocery store, at your kid’s ball game. Be ready to share what God has done in your life.

People can argue theology. They can debate doctrine. But they can’t argue with what God has done in your life. Your story matters. Share it with confidence, and let God take it from there

Ready to take the next step in sharing your faith? Write out your testimony today using the Before, How, Now framework. Keep it simple, keep it real, and watch what God does when you’re obedient to share your story.
