Why Parent Commissioning?

Couples holding babies during Parent Commissioning at the Immanuel Baptist Church Williamsburg Campus

At Immanuel, we believe this moment isn’t just about celebrating a new baby (though we love doing that too!). It’s about parents making a public, biblical commitment to raise their child to know and follow Jesus.

Parent Commissioning is rooted in Proverbs 22:6:

“Train up a child in the way he should go…”

That training starts with parents leading by example in faith, character, and commitment to Christ.

It’s not just a cute moment for pictures. It’s a commissioning for parents to disciple their children and a moment for the church to rally around them in prayer and support.

Parent Commissioning Commitments

Here are the commitments that a parent makes during their commissioning:

  • I acknowledge that this child is a gift of God and give thanks for God’s blessing.

  • As a follower of Jesus, I commit to put God first in our home, submitting to His authority in every area of life.

  • I commit to raising this child in the ways of God and in the local church, making every effort for my child to understand the gift of salvation in Jesus.

  • I commit to modeling forgiveness and grace to my child.

  • I promise to discipline my child according to the Word of God.

  • I promise to disciple my child, understanding it is my role and responsibility as a parent to do so.
